Located at the edge of the Spring Mountains, Summerlin is both higher and noticeably cooler than other areas of Las Vegas. The fastest-growing Master Planned community in the United States, Summerlin is made of a residential "villages" each with its own special flavor. The name, Summerlin, comes from Howard Hughes' mother's maiden name. Outdoor Activities in Summerlin Summerlin offers residents over 40 miles of hiking/biking trails, 12 major parks, plus over 50 smaller ones, 7 golf courses, as well as tennis courts, and residents-only swimming pools. There is a strong community spirit which is reflected in the many activities, classes, indoor and outdoor concerts and other events for Summerlin residents, especially for children and retirees. The schools in northern Summerlin are among the best in the city. A report in the Las Vegas Review-Journal identified Summerlin as one of the most affluent areas in the Las Vegas Valley. BUSINESS AND SHOPPING: While most of Summerlin is residential, there are commercial businesses in brand new office buildings lining Summerlin's Town Center Drive. A new shopping center with major department stores is now being developed at Charleston and Hualapai Drive. And Summerlin Centre, along Charleston Blvd., is home to dozens of restaurants and major chain stores.
